Cold Water Surfing

After seeing a video clip of people river surfing in Montreal, climbing over huge chunks of ice, someone mentioned "they must be Polar Bears up there".

and since some of those guys are my friends, I thought it would be funny to make a quick drawing for them

And, the drawing can be shared on tshirts...

Imagination--Paint--Computer--Screen

I had an idea

"art" and "water"

I painted on paper.

Took a photo of a brushstroke.

Tweaked it in Photoshop and dropped the surfers in.

Made a silkscreen, and printed the images.

polar bear club

http://www.cafepress.com/kawanheegen.215335780

I made this drawing about 12 years ago, with the intention of making tshirts for people at the summer camp. One of the many optional activities run by Camp Kawanhee counselors every year is the daily polar bear swim at 7am. If a camper participates in 10 "polar bears" throught the course of the summer he is considered a member of the Polar Bear Club.

I reently rediscovered this drawing, cleaned it up, and sent it in to the camp's webmaster. He added some lettering to it, and now the image is available on all sorts of tshirts and sweatshirts. (see the link at the top)

And, for those of you who have an interest in seeing what this particular summer camp is all about click on the link below. It is a terrific general program that has been running for more than 85 years.

3 different suites in 2 years

what kind of dialogue do these groups of work have between them?

similarities in the line work; a concentrated exploration of a path (implied or explicity expressed); tracing a route, much like my old race course maps in my training journal.

the acrylic paint mimicks the spontenaiety and immmediacy of an energetic, rapidly drawn gesture line.

the small size of the drawings and etching reflect an intimate meditation on the personal relationship between the waves, the river, and my journey through them, as ell as evoking a journalistic tendency to record the experience of both spontaneous revelation as well as a realization gained through concetrated long-term effort
