a bunch of boaters on message boards were talking about this piece. It is a fun one. Public art like this just reaffirms that people enjoy art, at least in some capacity. There always seem to be smiling faces around work like this. It's very encouraging!
It is a running record of the creative process. (Images are purposely degraded then compressed to help protect intellectual property.)

truely ART and WATER!
my work in a surf shop? go figure.
probably the best place for it. But it feels a bit like preaching to the choir.
I wanted it to hang up on the walls, until I saw a few customers mishandling the surfboards (which are a bit stronger than the glass in the frames) so I figured that the display case would be just fine.
of course it's still available through the main website for ARTandWATER

100 waves project (5)
The closer I look at something, the more complexity and variety I discover. I suggest that you might want to take a moment and relly look at what is relly there, compare the different waves and forms. Similar forms repeat within each drawing and still no two are exactly alike. Imagine staring into a body of wter. How long do you see the same thing? HOw often do different things seem to revel themselves? Immediately? Eventually? Stand close to the water and watch carefully, without watching.

100 waves project (4)
The dichotomy of same/different has been a growing fascination for me since I recognized how it exists simultaneously. It led to the drawing of the same subject, the same form, many times. Same/different brought me back to print making, especially etching; an older method of reproduction that yields strikingly similar copies. And, the etching process still holds on to the human touch of reproduction and imperfection that allows every copy to be just a little unique.

100 waves project (3)
If I were to be more accurate, this would be called 138 Waves. I set a goal of drawing a wave for each day that I had not been able to surf, since my injury. My prediction was 100 days, but the reality had been 138 days. It has been amazing to discover how different each simple drawing is, even though they are all essentially the same form.

100 waves project (2)
Waves are a process, like life. My work is becoming more and more focused on being a process. There is a repetition, a cycle of exploration and reinvestigation that comes from a desire to really understand the complex nature of something so simple as a wave. It take infinite forms that are based upon one simple, general shape. They all look similar, and no two are alike.

100 waves project (1)
These framed drawings are part of a project called "100 Waves". It began last winter as a drawing project, has expanded to include a website that sells kayaks (which will allow me to explore the waves like no other...), and continues to grow as I frame and sell the drawings to further fund the research.
