Still Point Arts Quarterly

and Still Point Gallery

Three of my pieces are currently in the online gallery for Still Point IV.
Out of that online show, several artists' work (including mine) will appear in the summer edition of Still Point Arts Quarterly, which is an artist-centered publication, on very nice paper, that includes poetry and prose in addition to visual arts.

warm day turpentine

First day that was well above 50 degrees was a perfect excuse to spend a little time outside and start a painting that has had an under-drawing on it for about two years. The complementary painting to this one was finished in June of 2009 and has been waiting for it's twin for too long. (both are on 3/4" wood panel that measures 23 7/8" x 47 7/8")

I debate whether to call these paintings or drawings. I don't care about the category except when someone (for some odd reason) feels the need to make me define them one way or another.

The green stain (which I made from oil paint) will have to dry for a few days. When it is dry enough to be permanent, I'll start woking into the piece with lumber crayon, oil bar, and china marker. At some point, it needs a little bit more paint, but most of the work is done with drawing materials.

here is an update with the painting/drawing almost finished, and sitting next to it's twin

Life Drawing blog

I just started this new blog for the sake of art students enrolled in my Life Drawing class at Fairleigh Dickinson University. It acts as a supplement to the class work. Feel free to comment on it. I am particularly interested in the comments from current students as well as fellow artists.

This is an example of two 30 second gesture drawings done on top of each other.

The challenge is to keep proportion in mind, but work fast, without pausing to measure. It is an excersize to loosen up your hand and eye in the beginning of class. It will also train you to see the bigger picture and not be distracted by details of a figure (which can be added in much later if you wish).

General Drawing blog

I just started this new blog for the sake of art students enrolled in my General Drawing class at Fairleigh Dickinson University. It acts as a supplement to the class work. Feel free to comment on it. I am particularly interested in the comments from current students as well as fellow artists.

This 60 second drawing is an example of how you want to address the entire page at the start.
You can use a light touch to feel your way around the page and dictate how you want to crop what you see in front of you, turning into a picture on a page.
Quickly define where the shadows will be. You can fine tune later with an eraser and a pencil/charcoal to make the light areas lighter (eraser) and the dark areas darker (pencil/charcoal).

transparency and overlap (thickness) repost

still trying to figure out where to go from this point.
It has certainly informed my work over the past three years,
but I want to engage this very simple idea more directly
with the two materials in this series of sketches

Emination (currents?)

death and rebirth

mostly thinking of the representation of holiness, godliness, the spirituality which cannot be defined, and how it is represented in art by abstract patterning and precious materials (which today are represented by certain colors like gold or blue)

but, the radiating lines of some divine power need to be noted
as well as the emotional content of the curving gestural lines of the figures

woodcut, etching, or drawing...

this, obviously, is a drawing. I often draw with printmaking techniques in mind; not so much as an intention to make a study for a print, but woodcuts and etchings are a favorite medium of mine because of the resulting aesthetic. Therefore, the techniques are in the back of my mind when drawing.

100 waves project (1)

These framed drawings are part of a project called "100 Waves". It began last winter as a drawing project, has expanded to include a website that sells kayaks (which will allow me to explore the waves like no other...), and continues to grow as I frame and sell the drawings to further fund the research.

learning to draw, learning to surf

Surfing a new wave is like using a new medium to make a surface. A wave has a general shape that we recognize as being a wave. A mark is also a generally recognizable entity. Both are evidence of some kind of transmission of energy. But, each individual wave is different. Every mark is different. Every mark-making tool is different. The subtle differences have the ability to make well-trained surfers draw pedestrian, unskilled lines, until they commit the necessary time to learn each unique tool.
